William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He was the third child of John Shakespeare and Mary Arden.
After finishing school at the local King’s New School, where he likely studied Latin grammar, classical literature, and rhetoric, Shakespeare entered adulthood during a dynamic period in English cultural life. Very little is recorded about his late teens and early twenties — often referred to as the “lost years” — but by 1582 he had married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and the twins Hamnet and Judith.
Shakespeare moved to London sometime in the late 1580s or early 1590s, where he began building his career as an actor, playwright, and shareholder in theatrical companies. By 1594, he had become a member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, one of the most successful acting troupes in Elizabethan England. His involvement as both writer and investor helped ensure the company’s artistic and financial success, and it later became known as the King’s Men under the patronage of King James I.
Between the early 1590s and around 1613, Shakespeare wrote the majority of his plays and poems, producing a body of work that transformed English literature. His early histories and comedies — such as Henry VI, Richard III, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Much Ado About Nothing — brought vitality and wit to the London stage. His tragedies, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, are considered among the greatest works in world drama, exploring ambition, morality, identity, and the human condition with unmatched depth.
Shakespeare was also a poet of great influence, publishing two narrative poems, Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece, as well as 154 sonnets that remain landmarks of English poetry. His mastery of language, character, and storytelling shaped the development of modern literature and theatre.
By around 1613, Shakespeare retired to Stratford, where he lived comfortably as a landowner. He died on April 23, 1616, leaving behind a legacy of creativity that continues to inspire readers, scholars, and performers more than 400 years later.
